Hanalei Bay closed because of shark sightings

The beach at Hanalei Bay on Kaua’i’s North Shore has been closed because of shark sightings.
Kaua’i Ocean Safety Bureau officials said several sharks between 6- and 8-feet long were spotted by lifeguards in the area this morning.

Sharks sighted in Hanalei Bay

Several hammerhead sharks were spotted yesterday in Hanalei Bay around 5 p.m., resulting in a beach closure, county officials said.
Lifeguards, who had just left for the day, returned to the beach to post signage and warn swimmers. They will reassess this morning whether to keep the beach closed, officials said.

Shark attack survivor’s words of advice for surfer’s friends

Whale carcass navigates jurisdictional bureaucracy

A chunk of shark-gnawed whale carcass drifted onto a North Shore beach yesterday between ‘Anini and Kalihiwai, requiring heavy equipment to remove it.
“The lifeguards confirmed there was a whale being chewed,” said Mark Schofield, marine mammal response coordinator with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, about the Monday evening spotting. “The predation was pretty advanced.”
