Coast Guard helicopter rescues fishermen off Kauai

A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Barbers Point rescued three fishermen from rough seas yesterday after their vessel capsized off Kaua’i.
Search-and-rescue controllers from the Coast Guard’s Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Honolulu received a distress signal from the 15-foot fishing vessel, Dauntless, at about 9 a.m.

Sharks sighted in Hanalei Bay

Several hammerhead sharks were spotted yesterday in Hanalei Bay around 5 p.m., resulting in a beach closure, county officials said.
Lifeguards, who had just left for the day, returned to the beach to post signage and warn swimmers. They will reassess this morning whether to keep the beach closed, officials said.

Ocean fair to celebrate year of the reef

The 11th Annual Kaua‘i Family Ocean Fair will be held at Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (Kilauea Lighthouse) on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There is no charge to attend.

WARNING: Waste water discharge in Princeville

Clean Water Branch had been notified of a waste water discharge from a lift station at Princeville on Kauai due to a power outage. 
According to preliminary estimates, more than 1,500 gallons discharged into waters adjacent to Sealodge Beach.
CWB officials believe the waste water may not have entered into the ocean due to heavy vegetation.
