Carvalho ‘elated’ by Kauai mayoral win

Kauai County Parks Supervisor Bernard Carvalho Jr. handily defeated County Councilwoman JoAnn Yukimura in the race to replace the late Mayor Bryan Baptiste last night.
Carvalho, 46, Baptiste’s handpicked successor who was supposed to run in 2010, used Baptiste’s political contacts and support to ramp up his first-ever campaign after Baptiste’s death in June.

Report: Ex-Mayor Subpoenaed In Dam Inquiry

Former Kauai Mayor Maryanne Kusaka has been subpoenaed to testify in front of a special grand jury investigating the 2006 Kaloko dam break that killed seven people.
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports Kusaka spent most of Monday inside and outside the grand jury room at the Lihue courthouse, but she left without testifying.
