Several hammerhead sharks were spotted yesterday in Hanalei Bay around 5 p.m., resulting in a beach closure, county officials said.
Lifeguards, who had just left for the day, returned to the beach to post signage and warn swimmers. They will reassess this morning whether to keep the beach closed, officials said.

A 46-year-old Kekaha man died Saturday afternoon while watching a canoe race in Hanalei, a county news release states yesterday.
Darren Gonsalves was holding onto a buoy used for canoe races in the water fronting Hanalei Pavilion at around 2:49 p.m.
At the start of the race, Gonsalves let go of the buoy and began swimming away.

Black Pot closes amidst grumbling

Black Pot Beach Park in Hanalei was closed yesterday for clean-up and repair work, but it was pretty much business as usual for beachgoers and surfers.
Residents and visitors ignored a sign saying the park, pavilions and campground were closed for maintenance and continued to use the showers and other facilities.
