Surfing: Slater wins contest in S. Africa; moves closer to 9th world title

Kauai’s Andy Irons was eliminated in the quarterfinals of today’s contest.
Florida’s Kelly Slater moved another step closer to an unprecedented ninth world title today by winning the Billabong Pro J-Bay men’s surfing contest.
Slater beat reigning world champion Mick Fanning of Australia in the final for his 38th career world tour victory.

Bruno Santos of Brazil wins the 2008 Billabong Pro Tahiti

Kauai brothers Andy and Bruce Irons advanced through to the quarterfinals of the Billabong Pro Tahiti yesterday.
But both lost in their quarterfinal matches. Joel Parkinson beat Andy Irons 16.33 to 6.14, while C.J. Hobgood stopped Bruce Irons 15.00 to 10.16.

Irons advances in Australia

Kauai’s Andy Irons surfed into the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro with his victory over Ben Bourgeois today at Snapper Rocks in Australia.
Irons produced wave scores of 8.67 and 9.17 to set up a fourth-round match against Australia’s Kai Otton.
