A deadlock in the trial against a man accused of murdering former Kauai surfer Emery Kauanui.
Jurors told a judge, they cannot agree, and are voting 11-1 on the murder charge against Seth Cravens. The problem, they say, is the terminology of the charges. The judge has sent them back to identify exactly which terms were causing the confusion.
Cravens is accused of punching 24-year-old Kauanui during a fight in La Jolla. Kauanui fell, hitting his head on the pavement, and died four days later.
If convicted of 2nd-degree murder, Cravens faces 15 years to life. The jury may also consider lesser offenses of voluntary and involuntary manslaughter.
