Report: Ex-Mayor Subpoenaed In Dam Inquiry

November 4th, 2008 · No Comments

Former Kauai Mayor Maryanne Kusaka has been subpoenaed to testify in front of a special grand jury investigating the 2006 Kaloko dam break that killed seven people.

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin reports Kusaka spent most of Monday inside and outside the grand jury room at the Lihue courthouse, but she left without testifying.

The century-old Kaloko dam released more than 300 million gallons of water when it broke in the early hours of March 14, 2006, sweeping away seven people.

Deputy Attorney General Mark Miyahara declined to comment on Monday’s closed proceedings.
The attorney general’s office convened the investigative grand jury in July to gather evidence into the cause of the Kaloko breach.

The dam is owned by James Pflueger, a retired Honolulu auto dealer.
