Police Say Armed Kilauea Man Barricaded Himself In Police Car

Kauai police officers use a Taser to restrain a 27-year-old Kilauea man who barricaded himself in a home for five hours on Monday morning.

It began at about 5:15 a.m. at a home at 4149 Kilauea Road when police received a call about a domestic dispute. When officers arrived, they found Kaleo Lovell Martin with a weapon. The man refused to hand over the weapon he was carrying, officials said.

“Officers required him to back off from the scene and Mr. Martin at this point does not want to relinquish that weapon,” Capt. Alejandre Quibilan said.

Police believed that weapon was a machete.

“Sometime last night, early this morning, he acquired one of our patrol vehicles. So he was able to get on the police radio,” Quibilan said.

Martin used the police radio to communicate with police negotiators. Police described Martin as irrational and incoherent.

He asked to speak to Kauai’s mayor.

“Although he’s communicating, we can’t make him seem to understand the situation right now,” Quibilan said.

Police escorted the family involved to safety.

Police evacuated nearby residences and closed part of Kilauea Road between Kilauea and Keneke roads near Kong Long Store, county officials said.

School officials closed Kauai Christian Academy, which is nearby the home.

At 10:28 a.m., the man approached police and officers used the Taser to subdue him, according to a statement by county officials.
