Six schools win their No Child appeals

Changes mean 42% of campuses achieved adequate progress

Six schools have successfully appealed their No Child Left Behind status, raising the final total of schools that made “adequate yearly progress” to 42 percent.

The following schools’ AYP status changed from “not met” to “met”: Hanalei Elementary, Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary, Kalani High and Waialua Elementary.

Kualapu’u Elementary (charter) and Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate also made AYP and exited sanctions entirely.

Preliminary NCLB results were released July 17. Schools were then given the opportunity to appeal their status based upon their students’ performance on the Hawaii State Assessment.

The final No Child Left Behind status for 2008 finds:

158 schools, or 56 percent, in “Good Standing.”

22 schools, or 8 percent, are in “School Improvement.”

8 schools, or 3 percent, are in “Corrective Action.”

17 schools, or 6 percent, are “Planning for Restructuring.”

78 schools, or 27 percent, are in “Restructuring.”

Kalani, Kalaheo and Waialua complex schools were the only three complexes in which every school achieved their goals.
