The Kauai Humane Society is now charging $5 for its feral chicken pickup service.
For three years, the society has offered annoyed residents a free, humane alternative to shooting, darting and poisoning the island’s feathered friends.
The Kauai Humane Society’s executive director, Becky Rhoades, says the charge will offset the rising price of fuel and other costs of the popular program.
Rhoades says she isn’t bothered by the birds. She guesses half the community views them a nuisance, while the other half “loves them.”
Feral chickens are thought to be have been brought to Hawai’i for illegal cockfighting. Hurricane Iniki spread them around the island in 1992
They have no natural predators on Kaua’i aside from humans.
