Hanalei sub-station reopens

August 31st, 2008 · No Comments

After four months of renovation, the 30-year-old Hanalei sub-station, home to the Kaua‘i Police Department’s North Shore station as well as the Hanalei fire station, reopened its doors Wednesday, according to county officials.

KPD Lt. Michael Contrades, Hanalei district commander, was pleased to be back at the newly refurbished facility.

“We are extremely grateful to everyone involved in the renovation and are very proud of our beautiful station,” Contrades said. “The contractor and sub-contractors went above and beyond what they were paid to do, including working on their own time and putting in extra features.”

He noted a number of North Shore community groups generously donated their time and skills, as well as amenities, including: the ‘Anini Vista Home Owners Association; Hanalei Community Association; Kilauea Neighborhood Association; North Shore Council; North Shore Lions; and the Princeville Community Association.

“The results of the renovation far exceeded our expectation and is a great morale booster for all of us at the station,” said Contrades.

Kaua‘i Fire Department Captain Sam Lee agreed.

“It’s a great feeling to come to work, knowing that so many willing hands went into the renovation,” said Lee. “We want to thank all of the community members, construction workers and county workers who were involved in the project.”

The general contractor for the $633,000 renovation project was Pacific Blue Construction.

Subcontractors included: Ahonui Gardens; Beachside Roofing; Chong’s Tile; Duct-ter Sheet Metal; JAM Electrical; Jungle George’s Tree Care; Nakagawa Painting; Rudy Ramos Excavation; Seichi Oyama Plumbing; Tropical Paradise Flooring; and Unitex Insulation.

During the closure, KPD’s staff was temporarily housed in a trailer on the property, while the Hanalei firefighters utilized Princeville Airport through a special arrangement with Princeville Mauka.
