Thousands of tiny dead crabs washed up on to Poipu Beach Tuesday afternoon.

Jean Souza of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, who provided these photos, says she collected about 700 of them.

A Kauai water safety officer was quoted as saying there were thousands all over the beach park on Kauai’s southeast shore.

No cause has been given for the die-off.

Poipu Beach did not close and the State Department of Land and Natural Resources is investigating.
