Moloa‘a blaze contained

Firefighters contained a brush fire in Moloa‘a yesterday afternoon after an unattended pile of burning green waste started the blaze.

The 1-acre fire started makai of Ko‘olau Road an eighth of a mile from the Moloa‘a Fruit Stand. A private water tanker and a county Public Works tanker were already on the scene spraying the perimeter when firefighters arrived around 12:30 p.m.

Engines 1, Truck 1, Brush Truck 2, Rescue 3 responded along with Kaua‘i Fire Department trucks.

By 1 p.m. the brush fire was under control and by 1:50 p.m. it had been extinguished, according to county officials.

In an unrelated incident, a shed caught on fire around 3:30 p.m. near Upa and Piko roads in Lawa‘i. Kalaheo and Hanapepe engines responded, extinguishing the fire shortly after 5 p.m. Traffic on Kaumuali‘i Highway was briefly stopped as engines accessed a hydrant on the opposite side.
