Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge will celebrate the 95th anniversary of the Kilauea Point Lighthouse/Station on Saturday, May 3, from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Lighthouse Day is an annual event that offers kama`aina and visitors a rare opportunity to receive a special guided tour to the top of the Kïlauea Point Lighthouse to see the famous Fresnel lens. This year’s theme, “Make the Dream Come True” supports current restoration of the historic structure, constructed in 1913. The lighthouse, including the roof and anchor bolts that secure the famous lens, are in need of repair.
Guided tours will be offered throughout the day, starting at 10:30 a.m. Roving interpreters will be on hand to share their knowledge of natural history and illuminate a sense of place for visitors. The Kilauea Point Natural History Association Bookstore will provide additional opportunities for visitors to support Kilauea Point environmental education. Keiki activities will include magnet-making, coloring and games. Naomi Yokotake’s Hula Halau ‘O Hanalei will perform at 3 p.m. and a special “talk story” with one of Kaua‘i’s own former Lighthouse Keepers, David Kahaunaele, will take place at 5 p.m. At sunset, everyone is invited to enjoy the commemorative lighting of the Kilauea Lighthouse.
Please join us for this FREE DAY at the refuge! Carpooling is encouraged as parking is limited.
