Powers, several Hawai‘i surfers miss cut

April 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Kaua‘i’s Roy Powers and several of his Hawai‘i surfing colleagues were the latest victims to fall in the Drug Aware Pro, yesterday, at Margaret River in Australia.

Powers only caught three waves and finished with a score of 6.24 to end up fourth in his heat behind Rodrigo Dornelles, Chris Ward and Drew Courtney. Powers is now out of the competition which should finish later this week.

Dusty Payne also finished fourth in his heat and Dustin Cuizon, Tonino Benson, Kekoa Bacalso and Joel Centeio just missed the cut, finishing in third place in their heats.

Sunny Garcia remained Hawai‘i’s sole surfer in the Drug Aware Pro to advance to Round 7 to surf against Dornelles and Jared Howse — the surfer who beat out Centeio to advance.

Garcia only caught three waves in Round 7, but it was good enough to post a score of 9.56 to finish second to Dornelles, who caught five waves for 14.33. Both Dornelles and Garcia advance to Round 8.

Women’s results were not immediately reported.
