Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River, Western Australia

Bethany Hamilton advanced to Round 3 and Roy Powers won his heat yesterday in the Drug Aware Pro at Margaret River in Australia.

Hamilton surfed the 9- to 10-foot waves to finish second to Australia’s Nicola Atherton and will face New Zealand’s Paige Hareb.

Other Hawai‘i surfers in the competition were Alana Blanchard, Megan Abubo, Paige Alms, Coco Ho and Leilani Gryde.

On the men’s side, Powers won his heat over a group of Australians. Powers caught five waves and finished with a total 14.43 points, over Rhys Bombaci who finished with 10.44.

Prior to Powers’ heat, Hawai‘i’s Sean Moody and Gavin Gillette bowed out early, not qualifying to advance. As of press time, Joel Centeio, Sunny Garcia, Makua Rothman, T.J. Barron, Frederick Patacchia, Dustin Cuizon and Tonino Benson had yet to surf.

The competition’s holding period lasts until Sunday, but should conclude before the end of the week, provided the conditions are good.

Larger surf is expected by Friday.
