Kauai Conservation Conference Presents Free Community Event

Wade DavisThe Kaua’i Conservation Conference will be hosting a free public event on Saturday, April 12, 2008 at the Kaua’i Community College Performing Arts Center from 5pm-9pm. The theme of this year’s conference is ‘Community-Based Conservation,’ and the Saturday event is meant to bring together conference participants and the community to celebrate the environment and culture through educational and artistic presentations.

The ‘Community Conservation Gala’ will feature Nainoa Thompson, Executive Director of the Polynesian Voyaging Society, who is well known for his traditional ocean navigations on the Hokule`a, and special guest Dr. Wade Davis, Explorer in Residence with the National Geographic Society. Davis has degrees in anthropology and biology, and received his PhD in ethnobotany from Harvard University. His work has taken him to many places around the world, including the Amazon, Haiti, East Africa, Borneo, Tibet, and the Arctic. Davis has also visited Hawai’i on several occasions and joined Nainoa Thompson on the Hokule`a for a journey that is captured in the documentary film The Wayfinders.
