Peru quake prompts tsunami advisory for Hawaii

August 15th, 2007 · No Comments

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for Hawaii following a powerful earthquake today in Peru.

A tsunami advisory is the third highest level of tsunami alert. Advisories are issued to coastal populations within areas not currently in either warning or watch status when a tsunami warning has been issued for another region of the same ocean.

An advisory indicates an area is either outside the current warning and watch regions, or that the tsunami poses no danger to that area.

The quake hit at about 1:40 p.m. Hawai’i time near the coast of Peru. The quake had a magnitude 7.9.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in ‘Ewa Beach issued a regional tsunami warning and watch for parts of the Pacific Ocean closer to the earthquake.

An evaluation of the Pacific-wide tsunami threat is under way and there is a possibility that Hawai’i could be elevated to a watch or warning status, the center said.

The earliest arrival of a tsunami would be 2:14 a.m. tomorrow, the center said.
