The simmering feud between two of the greatest surfers in history is on the verge of erupting, with Andy Irons virtually ordering Kelly Slater to stay on the world championship tour.
Irons and Slater, with a combined 11 world titles, have little time for each other. Or none at all. The last time they came together was when Irons gave Slater a piece of his mind during the Rip Curl Pro Search in Chile, where he told Slater he was sick and tired of his constant comments about his wavering commitment to the tour.
After bombing out to Australian Dean Morrison in the fourth round in Chile, Slater indicated his continuing participation on the tour this year might depend on whether he’s still in the hunt for a ninth world crown after the Billabong Pro at Jeffreys Bay this week and the contest at Trestles in California in September.
