Sunday afternoon seemed like any normal day for a contest on the weekend until Kauai’s Nathan Rex hit the water and then hit the lefts at Kewalo Basin in banging out 9 and 10 point rides to open up first day of competition of the RVCA Regionals of the Hawaii Conference National Scholastic Surfing Association.
So complete and put together was the young Kauians’ moves, that some were comparing him to former NSSA standout Andy Irons as he took the show in backhand dominating fashion in both the Explorer Mens and Open Juniors divisions.
Also displaying top form was Carissa Moore in the Explorer Women and Kekoa Cazimero in the Explorer Juniors. Moore, last competing in Australia during the WCT Roxy Pro where she finished runner-up, also dominated her competition at Kewalo’s, a break she uses as training ground throughout the year.
As for Cazimero, the lefts served as launching pads as the goofy footer moved on into round two in the waist high surf. Other standouts include Kauai’s Dylan Goodale and Koa Smith, as well as Maui’s Kai Barger and Granger Larsen.
