Elite golf event had 13-year run at Poipu Bay

After a 13-year run, the PGA Grand Slam of Golf is leaving Kauai for Bermuda, the PGA of America announced today.

Next November, the made-for-TV tournament matching four golf superstars will be held at the Mid Ocean Club in Tucker’s Town, Bermuda, and not at the Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai for the first time since 1993. The event was previously held at PGA West in La Quinta, Calif.

The Grand Slam brought many of the world’s greatest golfers to Hawaii, including Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, Vijay Singh, Greg Norman and Nick Faldo.

It is billed as the toughest tournament to qualify for, because the initial invitees are the winners of the year’s four majors.

“It’s a big loss, not just for Kauai, but for the entire state,” Poipu Bay director of golf Craig Sasada said. “We had it for 13 great years and it will be sorely missed, for sure.

“We as a company will move forward. You never know, we might get another tournament here. And anything can happen with the Grand Slam. It’s the first time it will be held on foreign soil.”
